Dear friends of Ukraine,
From Kyiv’s perspective, seeing Ukrainian drones strikes on the day of the ‘russian Davos’ in Saint Petersburg was, of course, a fine coup. The plumes of smoke also served as a reminder to the conference’s foreign delegates that russia has been overtaken by its own war of aggression. For the world, it was further proof of Ukraine’s capabilities.
There are also positive developments for Ukraine in Budapest. With the new government, Ukraine has reached an agreement on the minority rights of the Hungarian population. This means that EU accession negotiations, long held up by Putin’s buddy Viktor Orbán, can now move forward. The EU would be well advised to view Ukraine as a partner and to negotiate with it fairly and swiftly.
There is rather bad news on the subject of inflation. The Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) plans to increase freight rates by 45 per cent. The railways urgently need the increase, partly because they have come under more frequent Russian attacks and must shoulder high costs for repairs and new purchases. Tickets for the Kyiv metro are set to become three times as expensive, after the price rises were postponed for a long time. Price pressure therefore remains high, which is why forecasts of 10 per cent inflation by the end of the year seem plausible.
Kind regards
