Dear friends of Ukraine,
russia is beginning to look for a way out of the war. This is evident, among other things, from Roman Abramovich’s visit to Kyiv. The russian economy is suffering, discontent is growing, and neither russia’s army nor its arms industry can keep up with Ukraine. And the gap is likely to widen. This probably does not mean that the war will end any time soon. However, we recommend updating the plans for Day 1 after the war once again.
The Ukrainian government has realised this week that road traffic is more dangerous to the civilian population than the war. This realisation was prompted by several serious accidents. A €8 fine for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h simply does not encourage Ukrainian drivers to drive more cautiously. We therefore support the government’s announced efforts to force citizens to drive more slowly. The economic benefits are likely to be significant if the daily toll of nine road deaths per day can be reduced.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian defence companies are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the government. The government continues to struggle with approving arms exports. Industry insiders say that Ukraine is squandering opportunities if it hesitates for too long. Although Ukrainian companies are technically ahead in many areas, governments around the world forced to rearm could still end up buying second- or third-best products if they cannot get hold of Ukrainian ones.
We intend to discuss this and other topics at the Security and Defence Conference in Kyiv on 15 October. We also aim to bring together German and Ukrainian manufacturers at the event. We will be in touch shortly with a detailed programme.
We wish you a lovely weekend.
Kind regards
