Dear friends of Ukraine,
The fact that Ukraine is allowed to build its own Patriot missiles under licence does not help in the short term against russia’s Iskander missiles. In the long term, however, the licence could help ensure that Ukraine becomes a European Israel, which russia will continue to struggle with even in 10 and 20 years’ time. Beyond the Patriot missiles, Ukraine committed to further “drone deals” with NATO countries at the summit in Ankara. This means Ukrainians are also staying on track with the issue of NATO membership.
Meanwhile, our German-Ukrainian Business Outlook, compiled in collaboration with KPMG, shows that businesses are coping well with the war situation. You can find the detailed results here. We presented the survey yesterday in Lviv, Ukraine’s second most important economic city. The 80 participants were pleased to hear of the positive sentiment within the business community. This also marked our first event in Lviv – and it is not set to be the last.
Whilst the companies in our survey reported that business was going well, they also called for greater legal certainty. This is repeatedly under threat. At present, the major drone manufacturer Vyriy – known for having the cheapest drones on the market – is under investigation by a non-independent authority on suspicion of having artificially inflated its costs and, consequently, its prices. In a competitive market, this seems rather incongruous, and Vyriy is not the only one wondering where this investigation has come from.
Last but not least: The German Ministry for the Environment is organising a delegation trip to Ukraine. Companies in the GreenTech sector (water, circular economy, renewable energy and energy efficiency) are eligible to apply. Please get in touch if you are interested.
