Dear friends of Ukraine,
russia has recently reduced the warehouses of Bosch, Liqui Moly and Puma to rubble. German companies had also suffered damage in the weeks prior to this. For businesses – whether foreign or Ukrainian – the war is thus taking on a new dimension. As a result, demand for warehouse insurance is rising dramatically, even though the premiums are exorbitant. Given the inadequate air defence capabilities against ballistic missiles, I expect difficult months ahead for Kyiv.
Even in this situation, life in Ukraine goes on. This should include decisive reforms. Ukraine needs these for a growing economy and to secure peace after the war. Unfortunately, many reforms are being delayed, whilst the lenders are turning a blind eye to this and are not being too strict about the terms of the loans. I agree with the view expressed by The Economist that Ukraine actually needs pressure from the EU to make progress with reforms.
On a personal note: from now on, this editorial will have just one author. Most of the time, this will be the German CEO; occasionally, his Ukrainian deputy will write it. We also invite our readers to send us feedback on this newsletter. Last but not least: we have integrated an English-language news feed onto our website. There you will find news from our partner, the Kyiv Independent, the country’s leading English-language news website. So, with just a glance at our website, you can always find the latest news from Ukraine.
Kind regards
