Dear friends of Ukraine,

Across Ukraine, event organisers are reviewing their security arrangements after the aggressor successfully struck a weapons exhibition in the Kyiv region, killing twelve people. One consequence of the attack is that the Brave1 cluster organisation has postponed its Defence Tech Valley event in Lviv for the time being. We had also planned a delegation visit to Defence Tech Valley and are now working on an alternative programme for those interested.

Meanwhile, russia is intensifying its attacks on Ukraine’s ports. As a result, shipowners are reluctant to send their cargo vessels to the ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdennyi. Freight rates have doubled within a short period to USD 47 per tonne of grain. This has renewed efforts to transport grain by lorry, rail and inland waterway via the Danube. This will, of course, also be considerably more expensive than unhindered transport across the Black Sea. The earnings of Ukraine’s agricultural sector are therefore coming under pressure.

Amid all the commotion surrounding the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff, we have not yet written about Ukraine’s new Prime Minister. With Serhii Koretskyi, a technocrat will take charge of the government. His business career – as a company founder and CEO of major companies – marks him out as someone who gets things done. One of the most important tasks for the remainder of the year will be to prepare the country for the coming winter. It will arrive as surely as russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. We wish Serhii Koretskyi and his new team every success.
