Dear friends of Ukraine,
russia is waging war against the Ukrainian economy and is achieving successes in the process. The attacks on cargo ships and port infrastructure in the Black Sea could alone cost up to €10 billion (around 5 per cent of economic output) this year. The attacks on logistics centres could cost just under one per cent of GDP.
This will, of course, also have an impact on public finances. The situation here is not looking good anyway, which is why the president wants to speed up the disbursement of the €90 billion loan from the EU. The president is right to argue that Ukraine must remain competitive in its defensive struggle.
The Swedish foreign minister is also right to call for bringing the use of frozen russian assets back to the table. Using the €200 billion in frozen russian assets is a moral imperative and would help finance Ukraine’s defence over the long term.
Kind regards
