Dear friends of Ukraine,
In Kyiv, people were in a ‘popcorn mood’ as they watched the dramatic footage of the Moscow fireworks. In President Zelenskyi’s terminology, strikes with long-range weapons are called ‘long-range sanctions’. The people of Kyiv are pleased that Muscovites are realising that russia is at war – and not engaged in a ‘special military operation’ – that the Ukrainians have turned the tables, and that this also offers the prospect of serious negotiations.
They have achieved this because they are better organised at all levels and are technically proficient. The fact that this technical expertise goes beyond simple ‘housewife drones’ is also evident from this week’s German-Ukrainian deals. Hensoldt has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Fire Point to contribute to the Freya air defence system. And Skyfall’s interceptor drones are set to be integrated into an Airbus air defence system.
However, quite ordinary things are also taking place in Ukraine. Our friends at Berlin Economics presented a study this week on Ukraine’s potential to play a role in the production of electric buses and trams. The study shows that Ukraine possesses the necessary know-how.
