Dear friends of Ukraine,
At our summer party yesterday – the third since the war began – around 340 guests celebrated the summer in Kyiv in glorious weather on the rooftop terrace of our member organisation Expandia. The quote of the evening came from Sergiy Sergienko, a partner at Expandia, who described our party as “an act of defiance against Russian aggression”. Adding to the good atmosphere was the fact that this week we welcomed VKF Renzel as the AHK’s 300th member. This means we have grown by a quarter since the 25th summer party.
The party took place against the backdrop of a major political upheaval in Kyiv. President Zelenskyy has sacked Defence Minister Fedorov, who is popular among both the public and the military. As Fedorov is credited with many of the successes of the last six months, people in Kyiv are calling this a major mistake on the President’s part. There are many facets to this drama, but one of them is a conflict between new and old methods, between General Syrski and Minister Fedorov. The head of the Ukrainian army, an artillery officer, graduated from the Military Academy in Moscow in 1986. Fedorov was born five years later and is an advocate of digital systems and modern drone warfare.
Compared to the dismissal of the defence minister, the prime minister’s departure pales in significance. Yulia Svyrydenko reportedly failed to establish a good working relationship with parliament. As a result, parliament has become increasingly rebellious and is unwilling to have everything dictated to it by the presidential apparatus. One consolation in this context is at least that Yulia Svyrydenko’s designated successor is regarded as a highly capable manager and implementer.
Kind regards from Kyiv
