Dear friends of Ukraine,
Bloomberg reports that the Ukrainian President is dissatisfied with his Central Bank Governor because the latter is making too many concessions to the International Monetary Fund and shares its viewpoint. The story is, at the very least, not implausible, as it fits with the impression that the Ukrainian government needs to be prodded into action when it comes to modernising rules and laws.
Andrij Pyshnyi (the central bank governor) enjoys a good reputation, at least internationally, as someone who is steering the Ukrainian banking system well through the war. Part of the dispute also appears not to be specific to Ukraine: The central bank is focused on its mandate – price stability – whilst politicians expect things that central banks should not be expected to deliver.
Meanwhile, the list of German companies hit by russia has grown longer. With Kromberg & Schubert, a factory has now been affected for the first time, following a series of attacks on German companies’ inventories. Investors are likely to feel vindicated in their caution.
Kind regards
